The optimal combination of Kübler’s Safety-M modules and Sendix SIL encoders allows an easy implementation of a safe drive monitoring system.

In addition to the MSI 100 stand-alone Safety Controller, Leuze electronic is now launching its “big brother” – the extendable MSI 200 programmable Safety Controller.

The MSI 200 makes it possible for the user to connect not only a PROFIBUS fieldbus module but also up to 10 safe I/O extension modules, thereby extending the number of channels to up to 140 safe inputs or 100 inputs and 44 outputs. This allows complex tasks to be solved with this compact Safety Controller with a width of only 67.5 mm, since a large number of safety components can be easily connected and monitored in automated production lines or robot cells, e.g. Light Barriers, Safety Switches, Magnetically Coded Sensors and the like.

The safety circuits are quickly and easily configured with the MSIsafesoft software via the integration of PLCopen-certified function blocks using drag & drop functionality. In addition, this reduces wiring expenditure and minimizes sources of faults. The integration of new protective devices or safety components can be done quickly and reliably at any time.

An integrated simulation mode and the automatic logic testing gives the user the chance to perform a complete check of the configuration before start-up.

New interface cables and modular interfacing units from the MA 200i family now facilitate the integration of optical distance sensors from Leuze electronic into Ethernet and fieldbus environments. With the MA 200i gateway, sensors with RS 232 interfaces, for example the ODSL 9, ODS 96B or ODSL 30, are connected easily via an interface cable with industrial-grade M12 connection technology – meaning sometimes complicated and error-prone wiring is unnecessary. Gateways from the MA 200i family are modular interfacing units which allow for simple and comfortable access to Ethernet, PROFIBUS and PROFINET networks. The new fieldbus connectivity for Leuze electronic distance sensors is a perfectly balanced package solution with maximum sensor performance on the fieldbus level.

The toughest conditions dominate in open-cast mining. People and massive equipment quarry important raw materials from the earth under conditions of dirt, adverse weather and heavy vibrations. Friction-free communication and safety for both workers and machines must therefore be guaranteed, and without errors.

WERMA together with RWE has developed solutions

WERMA Signaltechnik has developed special signal devices for RWE that comply with the highest demands for open-cast mining. As one of the market leaders for acoustic and optical signal devices, WERMA are experts for high quality products. With rapid, dynamic development processes the company created optimal solutions for the largest open-cast mine in Europe, the Hambach brown coal region in Germany.

LED permanent/blink/rotating beacon 829 – extra tough – signalling for the world’s largest crawler excavator

Thanks to LED technology this beacon solves two problems simultaneously. LEDs with 50,000 hours light ten times longer than conventional incandescent bulbs, and at the same time even major vibrations have next to no effect on light emitting diodes. With its robust, lightweight housing of polycarbonate and PC/ABS blend the device is both temperature-resistant, highly UV-resistant and colour-fast from -30°C to 50°C. Extra casting compound in the housing base and stabilised PC boards further protect the device from the strong vibrations of open-cast mining.

LED traffic light 890 reliably defies dirt and water

The energy provider company switched from halogen to LED traffic lights with the 890 traffic lights from WERMA Signaltechnik. For open-cast mining applications the signal technology manufacturer additionally strengthened the housing and stabilised the PC boards. And here as well the vibration-resistant, long-life and bright LED technology really convinces, as shaking and rattling of the machines and conveyors has no effect on the robust LEDs. “Since using WERMA LED traffic lights we don’t have any failures anymore,” the supervising RWE electrical technician was pleased to say.

LED rotating beacon 280 warns against swinging-out excavator arm

WERMA has developed a further beacon version for RWE that is suitable for open-cast mining. Employees levelling with caterpillar machines around crawler excavators must always know in which direction the crawler is moving. This is signalled by the red and green colours of the rotating beacons 280.

RWE replaced its signal devices used until now that failed so often with WERMA LED beacons in order to take advantage of the factor of freedom from maintenance. WERMA fixed the new beacons with a supplementary PC board ring, thus ensuring that the inner electronics can reliably withstand shaking and vibration.

The future belongs to the IO-Link. Even so, there is still a long life left for the ultrasonic sensor with analogue output. That is why microsonic GmbH has now extended the M18 pico+ product range with sensors of a 0–10 voltage output and a 4–20 mA current output.

The pico+ ultrasonic sensors are the smallest M18 sensors in the manufacturer’s range. They have a 30 mm blind zone and a slim beam spread. Thanks to a 0.2 mm resolution they even scan small objects with a maximum degree of precision. All pico+ sensors can be had in 3 ranges and 2 housing variants.

The proven microsonic teach-in procedure allows the analogue characteristic to be set and the output characteristic switched over from the rising to the falling one. Both the switching design of the IO-Link interface and the analogue pico+ sensors are supported by the microsonic LinkControl software for extensive parameterization purposes.

The new MSI 100 programmable Safety Controllers – with 20 safe inputs – control machines with a wide range of different safety components, including E-STOP buttons, two-hand controls, Safety Switches, locking devices or light barriers. In addition, the compact Safety Controller, just 67.5 mm wide, can monitor up to four drive components independent of one another.

For large machines and systems, its big brother, the modularly expandable MSI 200, is the right solution. With this device, systems with up to 140 safety modules or with 44 drive components are no problem. Additional MSI-FB fieldbus modules enable the transfer of diagnostic data to the respective PLC via the fieldbus. The function of the Safety Devices can be quickly and effectively programmed using MSIsafesoft software.

PLCopen-certified function blocks, which can be integrated in the safety circuit using drag & drop functionality, facilitate menu-driven and trouble-free configuration. An integrated simulation mode and the automatic logic test assist the user right from the start.

With the ODSL 9 series, Leuze electronic has extended its family of optical distance sensors and set new benchmarks for range, precision, compact design and comfortable operation.

The sensors are characterized by a large measurement range from 50 to 650 mm – with high accuracy at the same time. They offer resolutions starting at 0.1 mm at a repeatability of 0.5 % from the anticipated value. The measurement rate of 500 Hz (in speed mode of up to 700 Hz) makes the new ODSL 9 distance sensors the ideal solution for moving applications. This speed can also be used to filter measurement values as well as for static preprocessing, e.g. regarding the average value, median or extreme value filters. The devices operate largely independent of object characteristics, meaning they are insensitive to gloss, structures and bright ambient light.
